Kurt Schurer, CGA, FEA

Kurt Schurer, the founder of Schurer & Associates, is an M&A advisor based in Calgary. He works with owners of middle market businesses across Canada to provide them with a fair market price from a qualified buyer and a transaction carried out on a confidential basis.

From 2010-2019 Kurt Schurer managed the Western Canadian office of Kroll (previously Duff and Phelps and before that, Veracap M&A International) focusing on M&A activity. He has closed several notable mid-market deals in various industries, including HVAC manufacturing, oil and gas skid packages, pressure vessels and heat exchangers, pipeline construction, pipeline inspection, and manufacturing of building products.

Prior to joining Kroll (Duff & Phelps), Kurt was V.P. of Mid-Market Divestitures for a brokerage firm in Calgary. There he helped the operation transition its client base from main street businesses to mid-market businesses.

His interest in mergers and acquisitions developed during his 20-year career at a major Canadian financial institution, working as the succession financing consultant for Western Canada mid-market commercial businesses (1999-2004)

In 1997 he relocated to Calgary to take a role as a real estate account manager dealing with private and public real estate operators in Western Canada. In 2000, Kurt accepted a position as the succession financing consultant for Western Canada and was subsequently involved with over one hundred family enterprises dealing with transition issues. In this role, he dealt exclusively with privately held companies, developing an in-depth understanding of the issues owners contend with during succession planning and later in the M&A process.

Professional and knowledgeable in his field, Kurt is a down-to-earth person who relates easily to clients on a personal level. A skilled communicator, he makes complex topics easy to understand and guides sellers through the deal process, always with the intent of doing what’s right for the client. His values of doing unto others as you would have them do unto you, patience, and doing the right thing rather than the easy thing, are evident in the relationships he builds and his ability to bring about a successful deal.

Kurt is an active member of Rotary Club-Calgary West, Association for Corporate Growth (ACG) Calgary, a licensed realtor, Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA-CGA), and a member of the ECPAC (Entrepreneurial Chartered Accountants of Calgary) Society. He completed the Family Enterprise Advisor program and retired certificate in 2019.

Kurt, who has a bachelor of commerce degree from the University of Calgary and obtained the certified general accountant (CGA) designation in 1989, frequently speaks on topics related to selling businesses to various audiences in Alberta. Focused on continuous improvement, he has completed the Canadian Securities Course and Personal Financial Planning courses through the Institute of Canadian Bankers and continues to take courses that he believes will help him better serve his clients.

When not busy with work, Kurt enjoys travel, golf, and fishing—both on the west coast for salmon and at lakes for trout. His future plans include visiting Canada’s national parks from coast to coast, learning how to play guitar, and visiting parts of the world not yet explored together with his wife of almost 40 years.
